We love our vacuums because they make cleaning the carpet, upholstery, rugs, mattresses, and more, so much easier. Though our vacuum cleaner does a lot of cleaning, we often forget to clean the vacuum cleaner itself, making them less efficient, and shortening their lifespan.
Vacuum repair men get most of their business from bag less vacuums and most of the repairs have to do with owners not properly cleaning the filters or replacing them in their vacuum cleaner. A clogged up filter overworks the vacuum cleaner motor and, in time, this will result in motor burn-out. A burned out motor will need to be replaced and this can cost a lot of money or you have to buy a new one.
It’s really not surprising that people forget or neglect to clean their vacuum filters. We just don’t think of it, and sometimes we just don’t have, or want, to take the time to do the work needed to clean the filter and it is a dirty job!. Let’s face it, we all have busy lives these days. Most people take the filter out of their vacuum and just tap it inside the bin to knock the dust off & pop it back in the vacuum. Unfortunately, this is not the most effective way to clean the filter.
The best method to clean vacuum filters is to take the vacuum to a place in your home where you don’t mind getting a little dirty-outside!. And using another vacuum cleaner and vacuum the filter surfaces. For pleated filters be very gentle with the vacuum nozzle-ideally use a soft brush nozzle to ensure you don’t damage the filter media.
Some vacuums have washable filters. If you have a vacuum cleaner with a washable filter you can use gentle water pressure and the spray nozzle in your kitchen sink or the sprayer on your hose, if you are a real pro, & clean the vacuum filter outdoors!
Even washable filters need replacing from time to time as the washing process will reduce their efficiency. “Lifetime” filters are a marketing concept-not a true reality!
NB Always remember to fully dry the filters before fitting them back into your vacuum cleaner. Why not have a spare set so you can wash one set and use the other and never be without your trusty vacuum!
Some of you may have access to an air compressor which is a good way to blast the air out of the filters, but don’t do it inside and stand upwind!!
So how often should you clean the filter on your vacuum?
Even a slightly dirty filter can affect the suction of your vacuum. Ideally, you should be cleaning your vacuum filters every month, more often if you are a “proper Hincher” & constantly use your vacuum. If you have a pleated filter that is not washable it will need to be replaced about twice a year depending on size of home, kids, pets and how often you use it..
